Laptop battery oddness

I recently had an issue with a very old gateway laptop.

The screen started turning dark and going back to full brightness over and over, when I looked thinking it was something wrong with the monitor I noticed in the system tray that it was switching from AC to battery power and back again over and over.

I unplugged it and it ran just fine off battery power.

I plugged it back in and it started switching again.

I removed the battery and ran off AC and it behaves just fine.

I put the battery back in and it started switching again.

I have had it running for the past 2 hours or so without the battery in with no issues, however if I put the battery back in....

Any ideas on what might be wrong? Or how to fix it? If it is new battery I may as well start shopping for a new laptop...

Hi, your power adapter is not giving out the correct voltage. Get another power adapter or try using a stabilizer before plugging your power adapter.
