Laptop Display Adapter Crash

So i have an alienware laptop that has a gtx 970M. After a while of having it, it started to kinda crash while i was doing things like browsing the web and such, but not while playing games. Always saying that the display driver has crashed but has recovered. Someone who is very good with computers that i know took a look at it and told me that it is having problems with the program that decides weather or not to you the gpu or the onboard, (i can never remember the name of it). So he went in and change some settings that he said just makes the general display and effects of windows opening and closing less flashy and said that that should help, which it did. I saw alot fewer if any of the display crashes. Problem is, is that i just did a fresh windows install on it. And i have no clue how to repeat what he did, and once again i am getting these crashes. I am unable to ask him again. Does anyone know how i can do this. Or if there is another fix?

Try updating the graphics drivers for your Alienware model from Dell's website if that hasn't already been tried.
