laptop not recognising video files, but does recognise still photos from my camera.

My laptop does not recognise video files, but does recognise still photos from my Panasonic Lumix camera. Do I need to Download a media software? I have tried Quicktime and VideoLAN VLC, but no luck so far. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks.

What is the extension of the video files? For example video001.mpg (mpg is the file extension). Knowing the file extension would help determine the type of file it is and what you may need to play the video files.
