Laptop using integrated GPU instead of dedicated

He's been having lag issues for weeks in games(at lowest settings) that should be running smoothly @mid-high settings given his pc config.
config- dell inspiron 5576
rx 560 4gb
8gb ram
r7 512mb integrated gpu since the laptop uses an APU.
He tried reinstalling different driver versions but that didnt work either.
It looks like all of his games are using the gpu from his apu instead of the rx 560. If this actually is the issue, How can he force the laptop to use the dedicated gpu all the time, on all games?

it looks like its running in cross fire mode as the one card is "linked" look for the cross fire option in the settings and see if its enabled you will have to disable it before you can set the r560 to primary

As usual in these cases, have you tried all these things that are the same for EVERY laptop?

1. Set PC's power management setting to "Maximum performance"
2. Plug in charging cable
3. I'm not a fan of AMD GPUs, but on every Nvidia's GPU's control panel window there is an option to choose for which app - which graphics processor to use. Choose to use the dedicated chip for all programs/tasks. You will need to use google for this one as for now i don't know where to find that option in AMD-GPU-powered machines.

Thanks for your reply! But my friend says he theres no option for enabling/disabling crossfire under radeon settings>gaming>global settings. how can he check whether crossfire is on/off and then disable it?

What a nonsense. This is a laptop with iGPU + Dedicated GPU. Such laptops never run in crossfire configuration. Also, crossfire means two or more AMD GPUs running in different PCI x16 lanes simultaneosly, connected together with multiGPU-bridge, so this is not the case.

Go to the device manager and disable the integrated graphics.
Dont worry the screen will flick and it will use the dedicated graphics.
BTW did you install the drivers for the dedicated graphics?

He did try that and install the latest drivers. but the issue is still surprisingly there. i guess he'll reinstall windows and carry out a clean installation of everything. will keep you guys posted. thanks for the suggestions. 👍

i have a 6 year old AMD apu that ran cross fire with a dedicated chip on the board...enableing it prevents you from using an external monitor....it is an option that was enabled or disabled in the bios

which brings me to a question....in the bios settings is there a cross fire option there?

You must be talking about a different thing. According to <https/www.amd.com/en/technologies/crossfire >, :
"AMD CrossFire™ technology is the ultimate multi-GPU performance gaming platform. Unlocking game-dominating power, AMD CrossFire™ harnesses the power of two or more discrete graphics cards working in parallel to dramatically improve gaming performance."

There are many terms in PC world and sometimes it's hard to understand them all, but in this case, its definitely not crossfire.
