Laptop won't turn on when dims

My laptop has been acting up since around 2 days ago.
So my laptop will work normally, until I leave for a bit and it dims from inactivity. When it dims and I shake the mouse, keypad, or press buttons on the keyboard it won't respond, it'll keep that grey/dim screen and then I have to restart to access it again.

Sound as though there aer confusions in far too many options for power saving and brightness. Check in Control Panel>Power options>Advanced Settings and go through all the possiblities to check they don't conflict.
