I have a budget of 1500 dollars and am looking for a gaming laptop to take on airplane flights and to set up in places like hotels and friends houses. I have been considering the Alienware 17 and 15, Asus g751 jt, and Sager laptops. Must haves are a 970m or 980m, an ips display, and anything else is cool! Thanks

I’m a big fan of gigabytes P35 (15 inch)/P37 (17 inch) series either P35x (980m) (approx. 1600$) or P35w (970m) (approx. 1500$). The reason i like them so much is that they have a height of only 2.1 cm, which makes the small enough to be carried around, while having basically the same capabilities as a way bigger laptop

I have had no issues with my P35x and there is two minor issues it can get a bit noisy when the GPU is under full load and the bottom cover is made of plastic instead of metal like on other thin gaming notebooks. Also the screen bezel is quite thick, and it has a quite simple look with no bells and whistles(although the keyboard is backlit). But you get an amazing performance in a thin form factor for a very competitive price. I think it’s amazing that they made a laptop featuring a 980m at that size when their nearest competitor needs 1.5 cm more to do it.

First of all, it’s not like it’s a bad build quality, most laptops is still made out of plastic. And yes reducing the tdp with 50 watts (difference between 980m and 970m) will definetly help a great deal with the noise. Also it’s loud but in most cases it will be inaudible in comparison in background noise, take from someone who is quite picky about noise. If you want something with better build quality look at the msi GS60 but it won’t deal with the noise problems and I’ve heard they have a tendency to get quite hot on the keyboard(and it costs 1700$ for the 970m) but I’ll let you decide.
