I have been trying to convert FLAC files to MP3 using VLC (2.0.6). I Have tried the following steps:

Media>Convert/Save
Add File (under the File Tab) and Press Conver/Save Button
Chose Destination, gave it a name with no spaces, and an extension

Here is where I have tried multiple things. I think I've tried every possible extension when assigning the destination file, with every possible Encapsulation and Codec combination in the configuration.

This either yields a 1 or 0 kByte file (obviously not worth checking), a file that is the exact same size as the original (but still doesn't 'play in WMP) or a file that looks like the appropriate size (but STILL doesn't play in WMP)

I have tried simply googling how to do this, but all the instructions I have found are telling me to do things I have already done (but in less detail). I have tried this on different computers running Vista 32 or Windows 7 64.

What on earth am I doing wrong, and/or why is this so hard...

This question isn't so much about a critical need to convert my files, but rather a frustration with VLC. It should be able convert anything to anything, and I use this SW anyway so it would be nice to use SW I already have to perform all my tasks. I could also just as easily use VLC to play the files and not convert them (which is what I am doing at the moment) but I would like the few albums I have as FLAC to be with the rest inside WMP.

I don't know if you solved this problem, but here's what I did:

VLC
-File > Streaming/Exporting Wizard…
-Select Transcode/Save to file
-Select the file you wish under Select a stream
-Select Transcode audio and decide on your codec and Bitrate. I do MP3 Codec, 512 Bitrate.
-Encapsulation format is next. I go with RAW.
-The next screen is where you'll save the file to. Change the end of the file from .raw to .mp3 here.
-Click Finish. Then, in VLC, click the file as though you were going to play it. It'll export it to the folder you chose, and you'll be able to play it from there.

I agree: seems a bit complicated. There's probably a quicker way, but that's what I figured out.

This worked for me and flac;

Select the file like your going to play it or open VLC
Media - Convert and save
Add - Your file - Convert
Select the tools icon next to the profile drop-down
Select WAV Encapsulation - Audio Codec - select your Bit rate and sample rate - Save
Destination file - Start - then change the extension to mp3
This worked for me , even on very large flac files
