My screen went dim after a cat walked across the keyboard

My cat walked across the keyboard of my laptop and the screen went dim. The button seems to work, as far as bringing up the brightness meter on the screen, but it doesn't change the screen. It stays dim, and doesn't get dimmer or brighter when you turn it up or down. What did buttons he push? Please help! I have been all through the settings trying to fix it.

Did you ever figure this out? The exact same thing happened with our less-than-a-year-old Lenovo laptop yesterday and we've tried everything (checking that Intel driver is updated: it is) to no avail. I guess I'll take it in to Best Buy.
