My toshiba satellite will no longer power up or charge.

My toshiba satellite will no longer power up. My brother and I have the same laptop and because my dog ruined my charger we shared his. Later his charger no longer worked on either computer so we bought a universal charger from RadioShack. It worked for quite a while but my computer started randomly shutting off and now neither will turn on or charge. No lights or anything

Sounds like it may have had a short in the adaptor that migrated to the battery. Generally laptop battery/adaptor life is 3-5 years. Can be shorter or longer depending on usage and other factors. The way you need to test to make sure of this is find someone with the same model laptop and test that charged battery in your laptop. If it works then you need a new battery if not well then you will need further troubleshooting.
