I have downloaded a srt file and edited it so only the foreign parts will show.
I played the movie with the original srt file, it played everything fine.
After editing I tried watching movie to see if subtitles would work. It showed

73
00:05:32,000 --> 00:05:33,100
Honey, I'm home.
86

then nothing after that. Why would this happen and how can I correct it?

The counting is very important in .srt files as it indicates which subtitle will show next, so that should be:

73
00:05:32,000 --> 00:05:33,100
Honey, I'm home.

74
00:0x:xx,xxx --> 00:0x:xx,xxx
"A subtitle"

75 etc.
You should edit all the numbers — tedious as it is, unfortunately.

There is a space between the subtitle and the next number in the file, but it doesn't show in the movie.

I tried editing the numbers and now it shows

Honey, I'm home.
74
00:06:25,320 --> 00:06:26,685
