No sound thru home cinema

I've just purchased a 3d blu ray player and hooked it up to my Philips home cinema system with coaxial cable (blu ray has no optical). No matter how many settings I check I get no sound at all through the home cinema. I've got virgin media box connected and it works so I know the system works. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. thanks

What make and model is the blu ray player? Does it work with any other devices?

Did you try another coxial cable? A coaxial cable that is known to work?

Is there a remote with the blu ray player? Any response to "mute"?

Thanks for responding. The blu ray is a SAMSUNG bd-h5900 3d blu ray and I'm connecting it to my home cinema system, a Philips HTD3510. I have a Hitachi HDTV which has 3 HDMI connections. I also have a Virgin Media cable box. This is connected to the tv by HDMI and to the home theatre by optical cable and works perfectly with the surround speakers. The blu ray is connected to the tv by HDMI and to the home theatre by coaxial but no sound at all. Sound only comes from tv speakers. I've checked the audio setting on both the blu ray and the home theatre and I'm fairly sure all the correct settings have been selected. This is driving me nuts.

Use the link and your own diagram to look for a "breakdown"; i.e., which cable connection if bad would cause that to happen?

Or maybe a port that is not actually compatible beyond the fact that the plug fits in.....
