Got a new TV with only optical audio output. Old receiver is only analog. I ordered a converter and it works however the sound is really distorted and no adjustments seem to work. Also the only input that worked to connect it was phono on my receiver. The other TV, CD, tape inputs resulted in no sound. Any thoughts on how I can correct this?

So, you bought something like this ? That should work and should be able to be connected to the TV or CD input .

The phono input on your receiver uses the built in RIAA-amplifier, because Phono signals are quite weak. So you're converting a signal from Digital to analog using a dodgy converter, and then amplifying the signal (now with excessive noise) a huge amount.

Using the headphone output from the tv with a "Jack to phono" cable would be a better solution.
