I had to replace a bad hard drive in my Pavillion DV9700 lap top but when I put in my Win 7 OS install disc, the DVD reader would spin up but the ready light would not come on and would not boot. I bought an external USB DVD drive but noticed that USB DVD is not a boot option. What can I do?

Hi,

Please do try these troubleshooting steps that may help.
- First is to load in BIOS by pressing F10 while the laptop is booting up.
- In BIOS go to Boot Options, check if you'll get the external USB DVD drive and if it's listed set it as the first boot device.
- Save and Exit from BIOS then it should reboot automatically.
- If the external USB DVD drive is not listed in BIOS do try a different USB port then test it again.
- Next to try is to repeatedly press on ESC key while the laptop is booting up then see if you'll get the DVD drive listed.
- If all these will not work just create a bootable USB using Rufus and boot from a USB drive instead.

Thanks for the reply.

The boot order screen offers 6 options:
1. ATAPI CD/DVD ROM DRIVE
2. USB HARD DRIVE
3. USB FLOPPY
4. NOTEBOOK HARD DRIVE
5. USB DISKETTE ON KEY
6. NETWORK ADAPTER (not present)

I have tried all 5 - all with the same negative results - Nothing. So frustrating to have a USB floppy drive but no USB CD/DVD drive!

I am not familiar with the "Rufus" you mentioned. Can you elaborate?

Thanks, Tom
