My ASUS will not start up at all, turned it off last night and the above words, with the second line reading,"or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key" with a blinking cursor by the 'y' in key. I have no idea what the heck to do to get my computer back. Any suggestions?

Solution
One thing you can try:
Create a bootable USB thumb drive
Ubuntu Desktop
follow the instructions to make a bootable USB thumb drive.
Use the F12 key when you power on to get the Advanced Boot Menu so you can use the USB drive.

That should let you try and inspect the hard drive, and still running, you can copy off any files or data you want to rescue.
