Basically ive got this setup

TV-->Optic cable-->Reciever
|
HDMI
|
PC

Also have set top box and games console connected to tv and they both produce 5.1 with no issues, so was wondering how to enable the desktop to do so?
TV is Samsung UE48H6700 and my home theater is a Sony DAV-DZ260.
PC is running Windows 7 with Asus P8H77-V LE motherboard and Radeon HD 270 graphics card
thanks :)

Go to control panel>sound>playback devices. Then left click the device you're using for sound output (should be label HDMI or monitor or something like that). Then click "configure" in the bottom left corner of the Window and you should be able to make it 5.1 (it's pretty self explanatory after the configure button).

Just tried that and only have Stereo as an option :|

Could you post a screenshot of your "playback devices" window? To post pictures, upload them to a free hosting site like imgur and post the link here.

EDIT: Make sure you have the latest drivers for your GPU.

everything is up to date :)

Well that looks OK... If you can't get it to work, it might be because your TV is recognized as a 2 channel setup. Does your receiver support sound through HDMI?

Does your TV have an option to set the audio output device manually? If it has, set it the receiver as the primary output device and make sure that the receiver is turned on. The unplug/replug the cable from the PC and see if anything has changed.

Still only stereo, however this has appeared....

Yeah. I only have 1 HDMI plugged in so enabling others would be pointless

Wait, you have it plugged to the motherboard?

Yes, plug it to the graphics card; If you plug it to the motherboard you aren't actually even using the graphics card, but the integrated graphics of the CPU.
