Using HDMI (from STB) to monitor and RCA audio to speakers

Hello everyone, I would like to use my Samsung S24D300 monitor to watch TV, however the monitor has no output for audio nor does it have integrated speakers. Would I be able to use RCA cables from the cable box strictly for audio, while using the HDMI cable strictly for picture on the monitor? Here is the setup I have in mind, but I'm unsure whether or not it would work for this situation:

-HDMI from cable box to monitor for picture
-RCA (just audio red/white) from cable box to 3.5mm female/female splitter to desktop speakers (speakers have their own power source)

Is my logic wrong here? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Okay great. The STB I'm using is a Samsung SMT-C5320 provided by Optimum, which has the audio out via RCA in the back. I will try it out when I get back from work, thank you for your reply!

yes you can. i have done the same. My LCDs sound card not working hence had to connect speakers directly to STB.
