I built a gaming pc a few years ago and was thinking about getting a vr headset but I didnt know how to go about it. I added a h100i and over clocked my cpu from 3.2 to 4.0 to try and get better performance, but I dont know if that is enough. I currently have
Cpu: amd fx 8320
Ram: 2x4gb gskill
Gpu: evga gtx 970 sc
h100i v2 cpu cooler
Mobo: asus sabertooth 990fx r2.0

I have saved up enough money to buy an htc vive but I would like to buy it instead of a new cpu and mobo or a gpu. Should I get the vive or get a new cpu or get a new gpu?

In multi-threaded applications it makes a difference at 4GHz and up being overclocked. However there's not much difference with even an overclocked FX 8320E running at 4.5GHzin games when settings are high:

Regarding a new GPU, if you are in North America or certain parts of Europe, a GTX 1070 which would be the only worthwhile upgrade for you are impossible to find or way overpriced. The GTX 970 is about equal to a 3GB 1060, and the 6GB 1060 (which should have been called the 1060Ti as the 3GB 1060 has cut Cuda cores and slower clock speeds) is only 10% faster at best. So your only worthwhile upgrade would be to a 1070. Bad time to want a new GPU right now.

I'd upgrade your core build (motherboard, CPU, memory) to a Kaby Lake. But the question regarding phone or PC upgrade, which do you think you'd get more use out of the money with? That's what you need to decide.

Im sorry I dont quite know what you mean by phone or pc upgrade? Its also not hard at all to get a 1070 at my local best buy for 399.99. I was just wondering if a cpu upgrade or a gpu upgrade would make more of a difference for vr gaming or if I can get away with my current build for vr until I get more cash to upgrade my pc.

That has been the common suggested solution. I just really dont like how it fits and the tracking. I know it doesnt make much sense, but I would rather spend more to get the htc vive and a pc upgrade.
