when start gateway laptop error messages says disc read error says to restart ctrl+alt+del

i turned on my laptop (was working fine before i shut it down) now says --- disc read error -press ctrl+alt+del and restart, when i do it wont restart that way, when i shut it off and start again same message appears

Possible hard drive failure.

Test the hard drive with DFT for DOS. Download the CD image from here: http/www.hgst.com/support/downloads/legacy-downloads#DFT

Create a CD from the CD image using IMGBurn: http/filehippo.com/download_imgburn

Then boot your laptop from that CD to test the hard drive. Use the Long test, more thorough than Short test.
