Windows Media Player

My son has a Dell 400mz pda which displays movies using media player with no
problems. My Ipaq 400mz pda has trouble displaying movies smoothly. What
might be my problem? I'm running pocket 2002 and his is using 2003 (I
think).

Maybe your storagecard or storagecard reader in you PDA works slower then
one built in his Axim. Try running the movie (some little one) directly from
RAM and check whether it is fine.

Can you verify if the OSs are different in the two devices? If yes, which
software are you using to run the movies?

I'm aware that Windows Mobile 2003 comes with many improvements in
multimetia, so, it is possible that you can see the movie better in one
device than the other.

BTW, depending on your iPAQ model, you can get an upgrade to Windows Mobile
2003 from HP at a not so high price...

WM2002 has a different version of media player to WM2003 on the Axim,
which got windows media 9. I understand the team put together some
performance enhancements in WM9 for PPC which make the video play more
smoothly on similarly specced devices.

As far as I can tell, there's no download for WM2003 of the Media 9
player, so it looks like you're stuck - unless you can convince HP to
offer you a rom upgrade for the IPaq, as the WM9 only comes as part of
the WM2003 ROM image.

What version mediaplayer are you each using? The latest is supposed to be
more efficient and run them better.

I'm using WM 8 v8. Is this upgradable? Do I need to upgrade to PC2003
first then upgrade WM to v9?

Pocket PC 2002 and Windows Mobil 2003 are both Operating Systems. WM9 is
Window Media player version 9.0. PPC 2002 came with WM8 or Windows media
player version 8 and WM2003 came with WM9. WM2003 has many improvements
over PPC2002 including a version upg from WM8 to WM9 which dramatically
improves performance.

Yes, it includes the upgrade of almost all the software that came with your
device, including the software included with Windows, like MSN Messenger,
Pocket Word, Pocket Excel, Pocket Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player
and many others.

I have been using Windows Mobile 2003 for some time now and I'm really happy
with that.

Their isnt a Pocket PC 2003, PPC2002 was the last to use that naming
convention. MS changed the name this time around to Windows Mobil 2003. I
cant say for sure that upgrading to WM2003 will solve that particular issue
but from experience the upgrade is well worth the time/effort/cost.

I dont recall which device you use but I would go to their site and see if
the mfg offers an upgrade to WM2003. Some did some didnt depending upon
model.

Yes, it is.

Officially, Microsoft has changed the name of the operating system to
Windows Mobile 2003, having versions named "for Pocket PCs", "for Pocket PC
Phone Edition" and "for SmartPhone". This name convention is intended to
help identify that the products are the same with small variants targeting
each device.

This is all OK, but there are lots of companies who haven't adopted the new
naming, but still name the software Pocket PC 2003, Windows for Pocket PC
2003 and wathever.

So, it's just a naming convetion after all...
