Cannot get input for Sony TV

Somehow I have disconnected my display - monitor and my Sony TV. I can disconnect the Sony TV and get the monitor but when I connect the tv I lose the desktop and all controls and icons. I cannot get the tv to communicate with the computer at the same timne of the monitor. For awhile I could get the tv to display but the monitor would go blank. All changes had to be monitored on the TV screen for resolution and which display. Now I cannot get the Sony to detect the input from the computer. Any suggestions?
