I have a Clevo W860CU that came with an i7-740QM processor in it. I've had no problems with the laptop until about a month ago. On boot up into windows 10 the monitor would show the windows logo and the circles starting to spin but would then shut itself off. I could start the laptop into the bios and leave it there all day but any attempt to go into windows would result in the same as before. I tried taking out ram sticks and that didn't work.

I next tried a usb boot of Ubuntu but could not get past the splash screen without the laptop shutting off. I then tried CD boots into windows but the laptop wouldn't even bring anything up the screen. At least then it wouldn't shut off.

I replaced the processor with an i3-350M. The computer would boot into the operating system just fine but of course everything is slower. All programs ran fine. I ordered a new refurbished i7-740QM processor and replaced the i3. The computer does the same thing as before! I even tried taking out the ram sticks again but it still didn't work. I placed the i3 back in the socket and the computer works.

Does anyone have an idea what is wrong? I am flummoxed.

Solution
Only thing I can see that is off with the test is that you used a non-new CPU, there can be a chance the used CPU you got is also bad. But without trying a third one it's hard to tell if it's the CPU for sure or the laptop.

Bios is the last (latest) one for the model. And if it doesn't load Ubuntu what good will a windows system restore do?

Yeah, I'm looking for another processor right now. Not sure I can get a brand new one though.
