Help with external monitor hookup

Trying to hook up an ACER S200HQL monitor to my DELL Latitude E5540 laptop. Juat want to be able to have 2 different windows open at same time on 2 different screens. Can't get it to work.

A VGA cable came is the pkg but it looks like there is a port for a DVI cable as well.
That is all I know . . . not very knowledgeable about this stuff.

OK what color is the connector you are using VGA is usually blue and DVI should be white or grey.

OK so VGA is what you are using to connect it. Could possibly be a bad cable try a DVI cable if possible.

Brand new right out of the box. only came with VGA cable. Don't have a DVI guess I will have to get one in order to try it.

If DVI cable has WIDER connection piece . . . the monitor has a place for it but my laptop does not ?
