I just got a new HDTV, but this new TV only has 2 rows of red, blue and green plug in spots. I need to be able to plug in my DISH satellite box so I can watch tv and I also have a VCR which I need to plug in as well, my kids and I watch VHS movies all the time and I have no idea what to do as these things only have the white, red and yellow cables. I have no clue how all this new technology works, and I can't find a direct answer to this anywhere. Please help! Thanks.

Do not have Dish so unable to answer that directly sans some reference source regarding any available connections. Overall I would be surprised if that could be "fitted in" to your setup.

If the converter is not viable then maybe a new VCR would be viable. I googled "VCR VHS component" and your situation does not appear uncommon but solutions are problematic.

Did find this at Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/JVC-HR-XVC15-Component-Digital-Encoders/dp/B00EXR6N84

You may be able to fit that VCR into your setup and budget.

These two sites will help plan out various connection options - at least on paper:

http://www.diyaudioandvideo.com/TV/WiringDiagram/

http://www.ceaconnectionsguide.com/

You do not need to "sign in" on the Connections site - but it is a bit tricky to use.

The idea being that you can first identify devices meeting the physical connectivity requirements and then verify operation via the manuals and specifications. (Some ports are "placeholders" so "compatibility" can be claimed.)

Plus someone else may now understand the bigger picture and already know some exact device or solution that will work.

The red, blue, and green plugs are a component cable.

The white, red, and yellow plugs are a composite cable.

Here is an older link that will provide some additional explanation - short and to the point:

http://calvinshub.ca/2009/09/composite-or-component-cable-which-is-better/

So you apparently need a composite (VCR side) to component (TV side) adapter/converter.

However, I would expect the new TV (make & model?) to have two or three HDMI connections (please check and confirm).

In that case, a converter box like this one may work:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA1KT1ZE9617&cm_re=composite_to_hdmi_converter-_-9SIA1KT1ZE9617-_-Product

Please post the make and model for both the VCR and HDTV. Then we can take a deeper look and perhaps identify possible options and "best fit" for you.

Thank you very much for your help! All of this stuff is way too complicated and I doubt I would figure it out and get everything running properly, so I have decided to exchange my TV for a much cheaper generic brand TV that is an older model and has the regular red, white, and yellow hooks ups. Thanks!
