How do I use the VGA and HDMI connector? Please help, urgent.

Recently I bought 2 cables for a gaming setup I am doing. These cables were a 2 in one VGA and HDMI, so an HDMI on one side and a VGA on the other. I connected one to my laptop and one with my PS3, both on different monitors. It isn't working! I would just like some help solving the issue. You just cant convert HDMI's all digital signal to VGA's pure analog signal just by using a cable. You actually need an active adapter

Please note that you mayalso need an audio cable. HDMI carries audio but vga does not.
