i am trying to connect a dell inspiron 15r laptop to my Sony receiver thru an HDMI cable to watch a movie on my projection sys

HDMI works well for this. Use the HDMI cable, no longer than 12' to connect the two. Make sure to switch the HDMI input on the HDTV to the laptop.

Why only 12' long?
