Mouse Pad not working correctly

I have an Asus K501L Laptop that I've had for over a year now, and the mouse pad has just started acting weird over the last week. The mouse moves normally and is still relatively functioning, but when I click it sometimes registers as a double click, and I can use the mouse pad to scroll using 2 fingers or zoom in and out of a page. It's been a real pain and I don't know what is causing the problem. If someone could please provide some insights or their thoughts on what may be causing the problem please reply!! Thank you!

The Touchpad may need to be replaced.
Does a regular mouse work when plugged into the laptop? Is it showing the same symptoms? if not the problem is most likely hardware, ie touchpad.
