My headset's microphone doesnt work when I use an extension cable

I am currently using a Steelseries Siberia V3 headset with my PC. In order to use the mic and headphones i bought an audio splitter for the audio and mic ports within my PC, which allowed it to work. But, as it is in the back of my PC, The lead for my headset is very short.So I have just bought an extension cable for the headset. Once I plugged this in, I can now only hear through my headset, while the Mic is connected, it doesn't recognise my voice.

Please help me find a solution so that I don't need to but a new headset

Will I need to buy a specific audio adapter that allows me to use my microphone?

I'm having the exact same problem! And I have the same setup. Right down to the splitter to use the headset mic.
