Hi All,

I recently purchased the Onkyo 'home theater in a box' model s3400 [ http://www.us.onkyo.com/model.cfm?class=Systems&m=HT-S3400 ] ... the sound and bass are outstanding ~~ However, when I turn the TV off, the next time I turn it on, the receiver changes the cable box signal from 1080 to 720, and I have to go to the cable box and hit the Format button several times which eventually changes the output signal back to 1080. I have a 55" 3D TV [XVT553SV http://www.vizio.com/led-lcd-hdtvs/xvt553sv.html] which itself is also quite amazing and I have never had an external system component send anything but the intended 1080 to the TV.

I have changed the HDMI slots and have verified 1080 still exists coming from the cable box directly to the tv.

Why is my 1080 Comcast cable signal being changed to 720 by the Onkyo receiver on its way to the TV?

thanks in advance,

Cog

know anything about the 'default' output format for hdmi and component outputs?
i forget the remote control button sequence.. i think you turn the cable box off and press menu.
that list will have a 'default' output.
when you turn the cable box back on and it goes to 720p .. it is probably the cable box.
i was frustrated with the cable box myself when i first got it.. 1080i kept changing to 720p when i changed the channel.
drove me nuts until i downloaded and read the manual.

I dont think the cable box is the problem. I have never had any issue with 1080 going to my TV. It seems the Onkyo receiver is forcing the cable box into 720 until I manually change it back to 1080.

anywaypasible, are you saying you have this Onkyo system yourself and you downloaded the manual of the S3400 model, or you downloaded the manual of your cable box??

thanks, cog

if it were my guess he downloaded the manual for the cable box.

what AP said does hold some truth though. even if it isn't your cable box it could be a "default setting" on the receiver. try reading through the manual to see if it gives any indication of why a signal would switch from 1080 to 720.

i know my receiver (not an onkyo) always defaults to 1080, and the last sound settings i used.

Your cable box might have select HD channels such as in Canada i got bell and 200 is the SD channels and 1200 is the HD. 300 for movies 400 sports and so on. Second of all your cables could be crappy and you might want try some cables I came across in my search for superior cables that are certified and at whole sale price!
http://www.mycablemart.com/store/cart.php?m=product_list&c=149 (3d ready)

And might I add
http://www.mycablemart.com/store/cart.php?m=product_list&c=179 (600mhz speed and largest bandwidth possible for residential right now, faster downloads with the least interference but soon we be using Cat7a Ethernet patch cables and GG45 connectors and that will be the new standard for superior internet speed.)
For digital audio
http://www.mycablemart.com/store/cart.php?m=product_list&c=11
And if you think your system bumps sweet with the factory speaker wires try these and see if they don't make you a believer; http://www.mycablemart.com/store/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=3686
Your Welcome!!

and make sure your Cable box is HD cause there could be 4 different versions from your provider.
And only order to the exact length possible!

also for ultimate in home theater protection try a Panamax m5400pm
Take my advice from a professional Gamer! :sol:
I hope Playstation 4 has Cat7a connections! :pt1cable: :lol:

Hi All, Thanks for the replies... I figured it out and its a rather stupid solution.. Turns out if I turn the TV off by itself first and then turn off the receiver and the next time I watch tv turn the TV on first and then the receiver, the cable box remains on 1080...

so

OFF: tv off --->receiver off

ON: TV on --->receiver on

Before I was turning them both off at the same time with the cable remote.

Now I have another question though. The receiver recently started click clacking every time the TV changes from a show to a commercial and from commercial to commercial. It was doing this before and then I think I fixed it by pressing something, but I have apparently now pressed something else and the click-clacking is back! LoL .. arrrgh. I love the way the system sounds when it's working perfectly, what do I do to get the click clacking to go away?
