PC to TV - HDMI problem

I'm trying to hook my LCD TV up to PC via a HDMI cable but it's not going to plan.

The TV either says 'No Signal' or 'Out of Range', and I can't change the display settings because when they're both plugged in the desktop disappears on the monitor and all I have is the wallpaper.

You need to set your TV as a second display. Usually right clicking on the desktop will let you bring up the video control panel. Then connect the TV.
Check your owners manual for the native resolution of your TV and set the 2nd display video resolution for that setting.
