I know it's a long shot, and most likely NOT possible. But, worth asking.
Could I take an older ASUS ROG laptop and put in the guts from a newer system? Could that work at all, or just a pipe dream?
Thanks!

A lot of things are "possible". You could for example take a Ford Escort engine, helicopter tires, a school bus body and make them work together with enough effort.

Take the two things, take it apart and see how they fit. You are not likely to get far though since the laptop cases, cut-outs, heatsinks, screens, keyboards, mounting holes, etc.. are designed per model for the most part. Some do share very similar specs and may even be basically the same laptop, then it may work. But most you can't swap around like this.

well yes, you could try to mod the case but that would be a lot of modding because with laptop boards not all of the ports are on one side of the bord so if you managed to mount it in a desktop PC case some of the ports would be on the inside of it

The problem you have is mobile motherboards are specifically designed for the chassis. There is not a standard form factor (ATX, mATX, etc.) like there is for desktop parts. So moving the guts to a new chassis is not going to be possible unless you get the same model that you already have, which would kinda defeat the purpose

You would also have to get a screen that would hook up to the mobo. I have replaced laptop panels and they do not hook up with a universal HDMI or DP cord. There have specialized connections that differ between laptops.
