Question about Resloution

Stupid theoretical question

if i had a camera which could take pictures at 2688x1520 and 1920x1080.
- i take a picture at both resolutions
- crop the 2688x1520 to 1920x1080

would the quality of the original picture in 1080 and the cropped picture to 1080 be the same?
or is it better to take larger resolution images, even if you have to crop them ?


i know its a stupid question, pls help a noob

The answer is that it all depends on the camera. Most (probably >90%) are, as rgd1101 said, just going to internally resize anyway, but there are some that actually do sensor side binning (and in fact a lot of point and shoots do this for certain modes like "night" and "low light"), which might result in better quality than simply resizing after the fact.
