Hey all,

I could use some advice regarding an upgrade. My 7 year old CPU doesn't hold up completely to my new HTC. It's looking like I have need of a new motherboard/cpu but don't know if I should go for a complete rebuild or just get a few new components.

Here's what I have that may or may not need upgrading: (My apologies for lack of links)

Cooler Master HAF 932 Advanced - High Air Flow Full Tower Computer Case with USB 3.0
ASUS P6X58D-E LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
Thermaltake Black Widow W0319RU 850W ATX 12V v2.3, EPS 12V v2.91 CrossFire Certified 80
Intel Core i7-930 Bloomfield Quad-Core 2.8 GHz LGA 1366 130W BX80601930 Desktop Processor

The pieces I don't necessarily have to replace are my RAM/GPU/SSD. I have a 1070 and 16gb of ddr3, 500 Gb SSD

Is there a good midrange cpu/mobo that I could get for a few hundred and then do a complete rebuild next year with the upcoming changes with Gen 9 Intel and GPU's?

Or should I just spend a few grand and do a new build now?

Thanks!

Any new build is going to also need new ram. Here is a bit of a mid-level system.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant
CPU: Intel - Core i5-8400 2.8GHz 6-Core Processor ($199.89 @ B&H)
Motherboard: MSI - Z370 PC PRO ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($119.89 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory ($159.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $479.77

You could use this and then upgrade later if you want to stay on the 1151 v2 platform. Currently used just by coffeelake, reasonably chance the next one will use it too.

Well, if you wanted to keep DDR3 you would be limiting yourself back to 4th gen hardware. Nothing wrong with an i7-4790k and a Z97 motherboard, but it costs just about as much as the contemporary equivalents.

Aside from the memory cost, upgrading directly to 8th gen makes more sense. Or sticking with HEDT and getting an X299 board and a 6-10 core 7th gen chip.

If you wanted to wait for 9th gen, then I suggest waiting.
