Why would a digital card be unreadable?

Hello,
I am in a panic trying to access my digital card. I was using it in my computer last night and it was fine. It has some very important photos on it..that I have not saved or printed anywhere else. All the sudden the computer wont read it...and neither will my camera. It says the card needs to be formatted?? I did not errase this card, so I am baffled as to WHY it stopped working. There are over 1200 memories on that card that I cannot remake. PLEASE HELP!!!

Have you tried using the card with another computer? I'm not saying it will work but if you have access to another computer it is worth a try. If it does work with another computer you should consider copying those images to a flash drive or some other type of media.
