I have an ROG Gl552jx laptop with Nvidia Optimus. When the laptop is idle, the readings for Nvidia card shows up with intermittent graphs, as if it is continuously switching ON and OFF. May I know is this normal? Or why is it happening so? Is there a way to fix it?

Hi,

It can be that some application uses the Nvidia GPU in the background. Do some basic troubleshooting steps that may help.
- Start by running Windows Update and install all the updates available.
- Next is to do a clean install of the Nvidia graphics driver.
- Go to Device Manager and uninstall the Nvidia graphics driver.
- Next is to open Programs and Features then uninstall anything related to Nvidia.
- Once done, download and install the latest driver.
- Here's the link: nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx
- Reboot your laptop once the latest driver has been installed.
- After the reboot do also make sure that Nvidia is set as the default GPU.
- Here's how: http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2615/~/how-do-i-customize-optimus-profiles-and-settings%3F

If this will not work it can also be a fluctuation with the voltage of your laptop. Does it happen while it's connected as well to its AC adapter?

I tried all these and reinstalled drivers. I was still getting the same graph.

However, I went deeper and found the solution for this. I used NVIDIA GPU state viewer to verify it.

The intermittent activity is actually a ping from the GPU-Z application itself. Hence the idle and off stats.
