dell 17R disappearing DVD in win 10?

the dell had win7 and everything was fine. went to win10 and the DVD disappears.

in win 10, i start with a fresh boot, then, the DVD drives shows up in explorer. eject the dvd, it disappears in explorer. put in another DVD, it doesn't re-appear. i've gone through device manager and uninstalled the DVD driver, re-booted and the DVD appears again. eject the disc, it again disappears no matter what DVD you put in it. i've also updated the bios, but same result.

what is my next move?

i've already swapped out the DVD drive. what is my next move? could it be the DVD connector on the MB?
