Have blue ray DVD with HDMI to AV converter to connect to older Sony TV. I plugged in HDMI and AV but only get NTSC screen on

Did you select the AV input that you connected the converter to as your source?
Some TVs use a shared component/composite video input. You have to set which type you are using in the TV menu. The component connection will give you a better picture than the composite.
