HTPC No surround through HDMI

Hello - I have an home built HTPC that will not output surround via the HDMI hooked to my pioneer vsx-920k receiver. Receiver is getting 2 channel (PCM) only. Source provides surround through roku but not directly from the HTPC.

HTPC details as follows: Asus H97M Plus Motherboard, Intel I5/4590/ Windows 7. Asus Motherboard has integrated realtek ALC887 sound processor. No separate video or audio card.

I have updated the drivers, configured the sound options in windows via both the intel driver and realtek driver. Result is the same regardless. Any ideas?

Windows is incredibly picky with surround sound decoding - tends to only output Dolby digital or DTS as 5.1.

Depending on source videos if they're encoded with ac3 or other methods then shark codecs will do the job.
