I am buying a laptop and I have narrowed it down to two models with similar price which were recommended to me.

I am unsure whether to go with a MacBook Air, or a Dell Inspiron 13 7000. The prices are similar (with discount code), the Dell is around £750, the MacBook Air around £850 - however the MacBook Air comes with free Beats headphones worth £150.

Here are the specifications:

DELL Inspiron 13 7000

Processor: 8th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-8250U Processor (6MB Cache, up to 3.4 GHz)
Memory: 8GB, DDR4, 2400MHz
Hard Drive: 256GB Solid State Drive
Video Card: Intel® UHD Graphics 620 with shared graphics memory
Display: LCD 13.3" Full High Definition LGD, Non Touch
Keyboard: Internal UK/Irish Qwerty Backlit Keyboard
Wireless: Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 7265 2x2 + Bluetooth 4.2
Primary Battery: SMP 3Cell 38WHR Battery, about 9.5 hours.

MacBook Air

Processor: 1.8GHz dual-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 2.9GHz, with 3MB shared L3 cache
Memory: 8GB of 1600MHz LPDDR3 onboard memory
Hard Drive:128GB PCIe-based SSD
Video Card: Intel HD Graphics 6000
Display: 13.3‑inch
Keyboard: Backlit Keyboard - British
Wireless: Up to 12 hours wireless web
Battery: About 12 hours, built-in 54‑watt‑hour lithium‑polymer battery

Other information: Dell screen can be moved 180 degrees, but is a bit wobbly.

Thank you for any help!

If you can do what you need to on a MAC, then that would be a good pick, build quality is generally very good, and they have a high resale value. It's slower than the Dell and has a smaller drive, but that is up to you if that is OK. Both are basic use systems not for games.

For the prices your willing to spend I'd get a Windows PC and attempt to get a gtx 1050 or 1050ti along with an IPS display. The Lenovo Y520 is 899 and has an i7, a 1050 and an IPS display.

But if battery life is your priority then go with the Macbook Air as it is awesome for portability and usability.
