Prevent loosing photos before formating an SD card

SD card needs formatting apperently, but how do I get the photos off it first to ensure I don't loose them?

Copy them from the card before you format. But I don't think you worded the question properly here. Is the issue that you can't read the files from the card and it tells you that it needs to be formatted?

If so, you need to try to get the files using a recovery program. Try Recuva http/www.piriform.com/recuva

Also, for future reference, be careful how you move the files on your SD card, you should not eliminate, modify anything that is inside your card with nothing but the camera you are using it with, only copy the pictures directly to your PC.
and make sure you format the SD with the camera not the pc

That probably means that your card is broken and you'll need to get a new one. You can try reformatting the card ("quick format" only) and then running recuva again, but most likely that card is dead.
