Solved! laptop does not boot and looses hdd in bios

Hi,

my laptop every now and then fails to boot. when i go to bios there is no hdd in the sata settings.
Now i noticed, that when i unscrew the hdd adapter (which is attached with just one screw to the mainboard!!) from the mainboard and screw it back on, it boots again for a while and the whole system works fine. Until the cycle starts again. It seems to be some loose contact. The first two years (warranty time) i possesed the laptop it did not cause such problems.

Now i ordered a replacement hdd adapter/connector, but i am somehow affraid, it could be the contacts on the mainboard aswell.

The laptop is an Asus r556ld with windows 10 64 bit. Everything else works fine on the laptop. And when it boots everything is fine aswell.

Any ideas? Cheers a ton!

Yes it could be the motherboard connections. If it is, and the new caddy does not work, that is the next step, likely will need to replace the motherboard unless you can find a repair shop that can fix the connection. Did you also try another hard drive?

Thank you for your answer. Yes, i tried other hdds, with the same result. I will try a hdd caddy in my dvd slot now. But i dont know if the speed will be fast enough to use that as my only (bootable) hdd.

Is there any way to find out where the contacts on the motherboard might be broken?

Could it also be a bios battery issue? battery issue?

The strange thing is, that once i remove the hdd controller from the motherboard and screw it back on, my laptop boots just one time and works perfect. As soon as i restart, it does not find the hdd again and does not boot anymore. Then i repeat that process and it works, as long as i dont reboot, then i have to remove and unscrew everything again. I considered loose contacts, but there is no difference whether i put the screws in loosely or all the way.

Not likely the battery or you will be losing the date information when you unplug it.
